Modern Psychoanalysis 2: Milestones in Psychoanalysis (PT 15)
Course Description: This course examines the major discoveries made by psychoanalysts which have informed the development of psychology and mental health treatment. This will include both theoretical positions and developments in technique. These major discoveries have, since their origins, altered the course of research, education and techniques in mental health treatment.
This course is likely to be useful for professionals currently in practice who wish to add their repertoire of techniques to include innovations pioneered by practitioners working with populations who were once considered untreatable. It would also be useful for new practitioners who have learned the major principles of mental health treatment, but who don’t have first-hand experience as to how these principles relate to, and interact with each other.
Learning Objectives:
1. The student will be able to define the topics covered: the Unconscious, Drives, Defenses, the Analytic Frame, Resistance, Transference, Countertransference, Mirroring, Joining, the Contact function, the Object -Oriented Question, and Termination.
2. The student will be able to describe the function of each of the above topics, in terms of how it serves or constricts the patient .
3. The student will be able to describe relationships between and among the topics covered, and the ways these interactions might either facilitate or interfere with the patient’s progress in treatment.
